Most refineries are taking advantages of opportunity crudes to process cheaper crude blends and thus increase refining margins.

While the decision to blend cheaper crudes might seem an obvious choice, incorrectly blended crude oils can precipitate asphaltenes, which are difficult to re-dissolve and can impact the pre-heat train performance. Currently, crude planners rely on past crude experience or lengthy lab procedures to test compatibly of crudes.
