Oil and gas are frequently transported in long transmission pipelines. Managing internal corrosion is one of the key elements in maintaining the integrity of the pipelines to ensure safe operations and avoid unscheduled shutdowns. The pipeline internal corrosion is most commonly evaluated by in-line inspection (ILI) tools, however, not all pipelines are peggable.

Other inspection tools, such as ultrasound testing (UT) or radiography testing, require excavation and not suitable for long pipeline inspection. A prior knowledge of where to inspect is therefore desirable to achieve effective internal corrosion inspection.

To address the gap, NACE published a few standard practices based on Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) method, which allows hot spots to be identified by flow and corrosion modeling. The identified sites are then used to guide the high-cost direct inspection.

Honeywell's Predict-Pipe software was designed to comply with NACE standards and can be used to aid the ICDA process by automating the hot spot identification process. The tool is designed to evaluate dry gas (DG), wet gas (WG) and liquid petroleum (LP) pipelines.
